Wales Enhances Transport for Active Recreation

The modernization program covers six rail buses, and TfW increases bicycle spaces. By summer 2025, all trains will resume service with improved interiors.

Series 153 rail buses originally hold two bicycles, but modernization changes this number. Now, the interior features a zone for ten bicycles, including tandem models.

A train with two carriages offers passengers 108 seats and 12 bike spaces. Chrysalis Rail conducts the work at the Landore factory, refreshing the exterior design.

Modernization addresses cyclists’ needs, because demand for such transport grows rapidly. TfW focuses on comfort and boosts the functionality of rolling stock.

Wales Draws Inspiration from Scotland’s Experience

Scottish operator ScotRail already completed a similar modernization program in 2021. It upgraded five Series 153 rail buses for transporting sports equipment.

ScotRail expanded space for 20 bicycles, skis, and large gear in the interiors. Additionally, the trains now feature outlets for charging e-bikes, improving service.

Updated Scottish trains, named Active Travel, accommodate 24 passengers per unit. They operate on the West Highland line, linking Glasgow to Mallaig and Oban ports.

ScotRail’s experience inspired TfW, and now the region adapts trains for active recreation. Both programs enhance transport accessibility for sports and tourism enthusiasts.

Modernization in Wales wraps up by summer, so passengers will soon enjoy upgrades. TfW aims to attract more cyclists and elevate transport quality.
