American corporation Wabtec plans to deliver locomotives to Kazakhstan worth $405 million. The contract includes the supply of Evolution Series ES44ACi locomotives for Kazakhstan’s railway company, “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” (KTZ). This agreement aims to modernize the existing fleet and support growing demand for freight transport.

The contract will provide modern locomotives, significantly improving logistics and boosting company performance. KTZ’s aging fleet can no longer meet the region’s rising transportation market needs. With new locomotives, KTZ aims to increase its competitiveness on international routes.
Why Wabtec Plans to Deliver Locomotives to Kazakhstan
High-quality standards for these locomotives will reduce operating costs, which is crucial for infrastructure development. The Evolution Series ES44ACi locomotives feature a powerful 12-cylinder engine, ensuring efficient performance in Kazakhstan’s harsh climate conditions. This engine reduces maintenance costs and extends the time between major overhauls.
Gokhan Bayhan, Wabtec’s regional vice president, highlighted the importance of this project for strengthening the country’s railway infrastructure. “We see how Kazakhstan’s progressive government understands the significance of railroads for the nation’s economy,” he said. “KTZ plays a key role in transporting goods between China and the West.”
How Wabtec’s Locomotives Will Improve Kazakhstan’s Railway System
The new locomotives will enhance the company’s efficiency along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. This will increase Kazakhstan’s competitiveness in the global transport services market and improve its logistics network. The locomotives will also adapt to changing weather conditions, which is critical for operations in the country’s mountainous regions.
The locomotives will be produced at the “Lokomotiv Kurastyru Zauyty” plant in Astana. The facility is equipped with modern equipment and meets international standards, certified under ISO 9001-2015. Over 700 employees are involved in the production process, ensuring high assembly quality.
Vice President Bayhan also emphasized the importance of Wabtec’s long-term partnership with Kazakhstan’s railway company. “Our company has worked with KTZ for over 20 years, and this partnership has become a solid foundation for the region’s railway infrastructure development,” he said. The combined efforts of both companies contribute to innovative solutions that help Kazakhstan become a key transportation hub in the CIS region.
The first locomotive deliveries are expected next year. The contract with Wabtec will provide KTZ with the necessary equipment to improve transport efficiency. The collaboration between the two companies continues to develop, contributing to the further enhancement of Kazakhstan’s railway system.
This deal marks a significant step forward in Kazakhstan’s transportation system development. The new locomotives will strengthen the company’s position on international routes.
