Retirement of the iconic Class 37 locomotives

Freight carrier Direct Rail Services (DRS) has announced the retirement of the iconic Class 37 locomotives after 64 years of service, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This decision aligns with environmental commitments and the modernization of the fleet.

The company plans to decommission 6 units, offering them through a competitive process.
Class 37, developed in the 60s, formed the backbone of the locomotive fleet in Eastern England and Scotland.
With a maximum speed of 140 km/h and a power output of 1.3 MW, they were a staple of the railways.
DRS CEO emphasized the focus on upgrading Class 68 and Class 88 locomotives.
Class 68 (34 units) and Class 88 (10 units) represent new diesel-electric locomotives with maximum speeds of 160 km/h, and power outputs of 2.8 MW and 4 MW, respectively.
This marks the company’s move towards modern technologies and more efficient operations.
The retirement of the iconic Class 37 locomotives reflects DRS’s commitment to sustainable and contemporary transportation.
