HSR: Developing High-Speed Rail Infrastructure in Uzbekistan
19.12.2024
South Korean companies are leading the HSR project in Uzbekistan, aiming to complete it by 2026. This initiative will modernize transportation and connect major regions with high-speed rail. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
South Korean Consortium Leads HSR Development
The South Korean consortium K-Rail One Team has started working on Uzbekistan’s ambitious HSR project. The group includes Saman Corporation, KORAIL, Korea National Railway, and Dongmyung Engineering Consultants & Architecture.

The Export-Import Bank of Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund is financing the project’s feasibility study. It will conclude in March 2026, covering route planning, demand forecasts, infrastructure assessments, and cost analysis.
Uzbekistan’s first HSR line, connecting Tashkent and Samarkand, began operations in 2011. The route was later extended to Navoi, increasing its total length to 741 kilometers.
Future Prospects for Uzbekistan’s HSR Network
Despite its importance, the existing Afrosiyob route does not fully meet international HSR standards. Trains reach 250 km/h only on specific sections, and freight services also share the tracks.
In 2023, discussions began on a dedicated HSR line for trains running at 300 km/h. This line will initially connect Tashkent and Samarkand, with further extensions planned.
The “Uzbekistan 2030” strategy sets ambitious goals for rail development, including routes like “Tashkent–Samarkand” and “Samarkand–Navoi–Bukhara.” Passenger volumes on HSR are expected to increase 2.5 times under these plans.
In July 2023, Uzbekistan Railways ordered six advanced trains from Hyundai Rotem, which will also handle their technical maintenance.
In December, local media reported a tender for 40 high-speed trains, but Uzbekistan Railways officially denied the claim. However, modernizing transport infrastructure remains a top priority for the country.
