HS2 HSR: Construction of a New Overpass with Wildlife Crossings

HS2 Ltd is actively constructing a high-speed railway between London and Birmingham, including the development of eco-bridges. The new overpass is located near Kenilworth in Warwickshire.

Work began in October 2023, and the structure will provide a safe crossing for animals. The bridge is 33 meters long and 42 meters wide.

Hedges and vegetation will be planted on both sides of the bridge, creating a natural habitat. Nine-meter-wide green corridors will allow wildlife to cross the transport route safely.

How HS2 HSR Will Improve the Environment?

The project includes the construction of a 90-kilometer railway section connecting key regions. The work is being carried out by Balfour Beatty VINCI, a company specializing in infrastructure projects.

The overpass will improve transport accessibility while minimizing its environmental impact. Environmental safety remains a top priority throughout the entire construction process.

The launch of the overpass is scheduled for fall 2025, and construction is progressing as planned. Modern environmental engineering standards help reduce the impact of roads on nature.

HS2 HSR plans to build 16 overpasses with eco-bridges, adapted for various purposes. Some bridges will integrate roadways, while others will be designated only for pedestrians.

Wildlife crossings will allow birds, insects, and small animals to move safely along their natural routes. HS2 Ltd continues to implement solutions to preserve biodiversity in the region.

The overpass near the village of Thruxton will be nearly 100 meters wide, including a pedestrian path. This will ensure safe movement for both people and wildlife.

The high-speed railway will become a crucial part of the UK’s national transport network. Infrastructure improvements aim to enhance travel convenience while reducing environmental impact.
