VR FleetCare train modernization: what has changed

X40 model trains, capable of speeds up to 200 km/h, were delivered by Alstom between 2004 and 2008. The completed modernization extends their service life by 15 years, ensuring safety and comfort.

The upgraded train features an improved interior, modern lighting, and designated bicycle spaces. Engineers have fully renovated the restrooms and replaced windows to enhance mobile signal reception.

VR FleetCare contract and SJ’s future plans

A €35 million contract for the modernization of 27 trains was signed in April 2023. Each train undergoes upgrades at VR FleetCare’s facilities in Oulu and Pieksämäki, where company specialists carry out the work.

Sweden’s national railway operator SJ plans to complete the acceptance of all upgraded trains by January 2028. This will enhance passenger comfort and extend the lifespan of the railway fleet.
