The deal covers the manufacture of 150 wagons as well as lifecycle support — maintenance, repairs and modernisation. The terms are outlined in a statement from VR FleetCare.

The first wagons are planned to enter service in 2026, with deliveries scheduled to be completed by 2028. Production will take place in Finland at the Pieksämäki plant, where the log wagons will be built to EU standards, as noted in a VR Group release.

The batch of 150 log wagons is intended to replace foreign-built rolling stock that has been in use since 2023. Introducing the new wagons is expected to renew roughly one-third of UPM’s fleet, with further upgrades planned in stages toward a full replacement.

The order also supports the broader production programme at Pieksämäki, where other wagon types are built. Over its operating history, the site has produced around 50,000 units of rolling stock. Today, the plant can manufacture up to 300 freight wagons per year, with output able to be increased if needed — a deal also noted by Railway Gazette International.
