Voith Group Partners with Mehrer for Hydrogen Compression Solutions in Transportation
07.11.2024
Voith Group has joined forces with Mehrer Compression GmbH to advance hydrogen compression technology for sustainable transportation applications. Together, they aim to create high-pressure solutions up to 900 bar. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Hydrogen Compression for Transportation: The Voith Group Vision
Voith Group and Mehrer are developing hydrogen compression solutions that cater to heavy-duty transportation, pipeline compression, and refueling infrastructure needs. This collaboration promises a cleaner, sustainable energy future for commercial transport.
A Strategic Move: Voith Group’s Commitment to Green Energy
With this partnership, Voith Group leverages Mehrer’s compressor expertise, introducing innovations designed to meet European energy and safety standards. Their hydrogen storage system targets efficiency, focusing on reducing refueling frequency for commercial fleets.
Jörg-Peter Mehrer, President of Mehrer Compression GmbH, emphasized the impact of merging Voith’s drive technology with Mehrer’s oil-free hydrogen expertise. Together, they aim to make hydrogen an integral part of sustainable transport solutions. This collaboration is a crucial step toward lowering emissions in commercial transport, a sector the European Union is striving to decarbonize.
According to the European Hydrogen Backbone initiative, the EU hydrogen market may achieve 40 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030. Hydrogen is projected to comprise up to 14% of the EU’s energy mix by 2050, underscoring Voith and Mehrer’s significant role in this transition.
