The Transforming Rail in Virginia program will receive over $1.7 billion to acquire and develop key rail corridors aimed at boosting passenger service and reducing roadway congestion.

Virginia plans to enhance service capacity, expand connections, and relieve urban traffic by investing in strategic rail infrastructure. This funding will support both economic mobility and long-term environmental goals.

Virginia Strengthens Public Transit with Major Rail Funding

Nearly $2.4 billion will go to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to maintain and expand metro operations. These improvements aim to support population growth and promote sustainable commuting.

The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) will receive $110 million to strengthen its commuter rail services, improve reliability, and modernize operations. These updates align with the state’s multimodal transport strategy.

The Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) will manage $63.6 million for freight rail programs, preservation efforts, and long-term transit planning. This initiative ensures both resilience and continuity in rail operations.

Virginia Allocates Billions in Fiscal Year 2026 Budget

For the 2026 fiscal year, Virginia will direct $442 million to WMATA and $245.3 million to the Transforming Rail in Virginia project. These allocations will accelerate key infrastructure upgrades and capacity improvements.

Additionally, $17 million will go to VRE, and $20.3 million will support DRPT’s rail initiatives. These investments mark a firm commitment to transit modernization across multiple regions.
