Video Review of Ukrainian Railways’ Children’s Carriage: Comfortable Travel for Kids

In August 2024, Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) introduced a new service for family trips—its first specialized children’s carriage, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

It began operating on the Kharkiv—Yasinya route, marking a significant step in developing transport infrastructure focused on children’s comfort.

Features of the Children’s Carriage

This carriage was developed in collaboration with UNICEF and with the support of the Belgian government, highlighting the social importance of the project during challenging times for Ukraine.

The children’s carriage is equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable and safe journey with children. Inside the carriage, there are special areas for games, relaxation, and entertainment, along with facilities for kids under 8 years old.

Additionally, an important aspect is that the ticket price for the children’s carriage is the same as for regular compartment cars of the same class.

This makes the trip accessible to all families. Tickets can be purchased through the Ukrzaliznytsia mobile app, significantly simplifying the booking process.

Support from the Belgian Government and UNICEF

The development and implementation of the children’s carriage were made possible thanks to financial support from the Belgian government. This project demonstrates a commitment to creating a convenient and safe environment for children, even during difficult times.

UNICEF representatives emphasize that such initiatives play an important role in children’s development by providing them with the opportunity to travel comfortably and safely.

Tickets and Rules

Tickets for the children’s carriage can only be purchased through the mobile app, in line with the general trend of digitalizing services in Ukraine. Notably, children under the age of 5 can travel for free if they do not occupy a separate seat. This is another benefit for families with young children planning trips across Ukraine.

Ukrainian Railways’ Future Plans

At the moment, the children’s carriage operates only on the Kharkiv—Yasinya route, but it is expected that another similar carriage will soon appear on the Kharkiv—Uzhhorod route. This will be another step in developing services for family travel by rail.

The launch of the children’s carriage is a significant step by Ukrainian Railways in creating infrastructure focused on the needs of the youngest passengers. It not only makes travel easier for families but also underscores the importance of ensuring children’s comfort and safety during rail journeys.
