Hungary plans to cut railway access fees by 40%
30.06.2021
Hungary is considering the possibility of reducing the railway access fee by 40% following the example of a number of EU countries.
The local Ministry of Innovation and Technology believes that this measure is necessary to support the railway industry. The ministry has already prepared a draft decision for the government, but it has not yet been considered, reports the railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to urm.media.
However, the authors of the draft expect its adoption in mid-July. Now in the EU, countries are allowed to choose the size of the fee for the time of the pandemic. In some countries, the payment for access to the railway infrastructure was completely abolished (France, Austria), and in others – they were reduced (Germany, the Netherlands).

Also, the Hungarian authorities are planning to get additional transit routes between Ukraine and Austria due to the reduction in fees. Now the country is losing the competition in this direction to Slovakia, because such transit there costs 660 euros for cargo carriers, while for Hungary it costs 1285 euros.
As a reminder, on June 11, a new container terminal was opened on the Kazakh-Chinese border at Dostyk station. At the first stage the terminal’s capacity will be 80 thousand containers per year.
