Valley Line West Marks Key Milestone in Transit Growth

The arrival of the first Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) signals real progress in expanding Edmonton’s light rail network. Manufactured by Hyundai Rotem in Changwon, South Korea, the unit began its journey on July 1.

It traveled across the Pacific Ocean, docking at the Port of Tacoma, Washington, on July 20. From there, specialized carriers transported it by road to the Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility in southeast Edmonton.

City of Edmonton Valley Line West Director Brian Latte said this delivery symbolizes forward momentum. He emphasized that as Edmonton approaches two million residents, the project will redefine how people travel, build, and connect.

Valley Line West Fleet Plans and Public Engagement

Hyundai Rotem is contracted to supply 46 LRVs for the Valley Line West. Sixteen are already in production, with deliveries scheduled through 2027. These trains will work seamlessly with the 26 vehicles serving the Valley Line Southeast, ensuring full compatibility across the 27-kilometre route.

Hyundai Rotem Project Manager Chiseung Kim called the arrival a result of years of collaboration. He noted the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles suited to Edmonton’s needs and enhancing residents’ daily commutes.

In 2023, Edmonton residents tested a full-scale mock-up of the LRV. Their feedback helped improve accessibility, comfort, and usability, shaping the final production model.

Now that the first unit has arrived, teams will assemble and test it locally. Commissioning will take place on Valley Line Southeast tracks to confirm performance without affecting passenger service.
