The 36-kilometer regional line first opened in 1873. By the late 19th century, it connected Paris directly to Luchon, attracting visitors to its thermal spas and ski resorts.

However, by the 1980s, the railway infrastructure had begun to deteriorate. After a severe flood in June 2013, SNCF decided to suspend operations due to the unsafe condition of the track.

Passenger service is now faster and more convenient for Occitanie residents

In 2019, management of the line was transferred to the regional authorities of Occitanie, who invested $72 million in the project. The large-scale reconstruction included upgrades to three stations and the installation of safety systems at 25 level crossings.

Around 250 professionals were involved in the work. The project was completed by summer 2025. Passenger service now operates daily, with six trips in each direction.

Trains cover the distance between Montréjeau and Luchon in just 35 minutes, while buses take about 55 minutes. The route includes three intermediate stops along the way.

The line connects to the major Toulouse–Tarbes–Pau–Bayonne railway, which spans 320 kilometers. This integration improves regional mobility and boosts tourism development.

Local residents celebrated the reopening with festive events. Both passengers and officials emphasized the importance of the railway for the sustainable development of southern Occitanie.
