Mumbai to Acquire 2,856 Vande Metro Coaches for Suburban Services

India’s MRVC has issued a massive tender for 2,856 Vande Metro coaches to strengthen Mumbai’s suburban services, thereby making the $2.38B project one of the biggest in Mumbai’s railway history.

Contract and Tender Conditions
The tender includes providing for coaches and maintenance for 35 years. At the same time, the construction of two maintenance depots for serving the trains is provided for. Applications should be presented on December 8, and the winning bidder will be chosen on December 22.

The first Vande Metro train would be delivered in approximately two years since the contract was signed. The contract, however, requires that the “Make in India” policy be followed along with appropriate utilization of local production infrastructures.
Importance for Mumbai’s Transport System
March has seen Indian officials confirm orders for 238 trains for the suburban network. The key focus is to ease crowding on overburdened tracks. Accordingly, other infra projects for $1.9B are being installed and include 300 kilometers of new tracks.
The Vande Metro was introduced in September 2024 and is designed on the Vande Bharat platform. It consists of 12 cars and a seating capacity for 3,208 individuals, providing higher comfort and carrying capacity for each day’s journey.

Applications should be submitted on December 8, and bidding commences on December 22.
