29.05.2025
Uzbekistan has signed a contract with China’s CRRC to supply 50 new shunting locomotives, aiming to renew its heavily worn fleet and strengthen its logistics capacity. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The head of “Uzbekiston Temir Yullari,” Zufar Narzullaev, stated that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev personally instructed the deal. The decision follows the alarming 91% wear rate of existing shunting locomotives.

Currently, the fleet consists of outdated TEM2 and ChME3 models, which no longer meet modern efficiency standards. The purchase from CRRC will improve the quality of freight and domestic rail services.
Uzbekistan has been cooperating with the Chinese manufacturer for over 20 years. CRRC is currently delivering 38 units, including diesel and electric locomotives.
Uzbekistan and CRRC Expand Cooperation
By the end of the year, Uzbekistan expects to receive 8 diesel locomotives and 4 electric units. At the same time, 12 existing freight-passenger electric locomotives are undergoing modernization.
CRRC continues to strengthen its presence across the 1520 mm gauge network, actively supplying rolling stock to Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan as well. This highlights the region’s growing demand for reliable Chinese rail technology.
Uzbekistan’s Rail Sector Needs Modernization
Uzbekistan is prioritizing infrastructure renewal, and the new CRRC deal is a key step. The upgraded rolling stock will reduce operational costs and improve safety across the network.
The order for 50 locomotives reflects the country’s strategic intent to enhance logistics, expand transit capabilities, and accelerate economic development. Chinese-built technology is expected to play a vital role in this transformation.
