The 465-kilometer Bukhara–Urgench–Khiva route has been fully electrified, enabling the launch of South Korean-built high-speed trains next year across key economic corridors.
Uzbekistan Partners with Hyundai Rotem to Modernize Rail
In June 2024, Uzbekistan Railways awarded Hyundai Rotem and KORAIL a $200 million contract for the delivery and maintenance of high-speed trains powered by distributed traction systems.
Each trainset consists of seven cars and accommodates 389 passengers, reaching speeds up to 250 km/h. Six units will be deployed across a network stretching 1,216 kilometers.
The upgraded route links Tashkent to Khiva, cutting travel time from 14 hours to just 7 hours and 40 minutes, a dramatic improvement in passenger convenience.
Uzbekistan Reduces Travel Time and Boosts Passenger Volume
Uzbekistan expects annual ridership to triple—from 1 million to over 3 million passengers—while freight capacity will rise sixfold to 6 million tons per year.
This project reflects Uzbekistan’s broader strategy to boost mobility, attract investment, and transform into a regional logistics and tourism hub in Central Asia.
By integrating Korean technology and international expertise, the country continues advancing its national infrastructure for long-term economic growth and efficiency.
