Uzbekistan and Korea Boost High-Speed Rail Partnership

Uzbekistan and South Korea are accelerating cooperation on High-Speed Rail by launching feasibility talks for a new passenger line between Tashkent and Samarkand. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

During a strategic meeting in Tashkent, Deputy Minister of Transport Jasurbek Choriev welcomed Korea National Railway CEO Lee Song Hae. They discussed introducing advanced signaling systems, real-time geolocation, and Korean navigation technology.

These innovations are essential for enhancing railway safety and modernizing infrastructure. Both sides emphasized the importance of integrating cutting-edge management tools into Uzbekistan’s national railway operations.
Lee Song Hae also provided a detailed update on the ongoing feasibility study for the High-Speed Rail line. This initiative follows Presidential Decree No. PP-329, issued on October 10, 2023, which prioritizes the project’s development.
High-Speed Rail Study Funded by Korean Consortium
To execute the study, a consortium will include Saman Engineering, Dong Myeong Engineering Consultants & Architecture Co., Ltd., Korea Railroad Corporation, and Korea National Railway. Funding is secured via a grant from Korea Eximbank.
On February 14, officials signed the required documents to begin the technical and financial assessment. This step officially launched the practical phase of the project’s implementation.
High-Speed Rail to Modernize Uzbekistan’s Transport Network
The High-Speed Rail route is expected to enhance regional connectivity and support economic growth. It also serves as a pilot model for future upgrades in the country’s railway system.
Uzbekistan Railways, a government-owned joint-stock company founded in 1994, oversees national rail operations. The network spans 4,669 kilometers, with 2,446 kilometers electrified. The company employs 54,700 staff.
Through international partnerships and targeted investments, Uzbekistan aims to modernize its transportation landscape and elevate travel standards across Central Asia.
