It will hold 24 carriages at full capacity, all overnight work being programmed to prevent disruption of service. Rob Warnes, strategic development director for Northern, described the project as long-term planning and significant spending on resilience in operation.

Depot role in Transpennine Route Upgrade

Transpennine Route Upgrade spans 76 miles from Manchester through Huddersfield, Leeds, to York. Its largest symbol was the depot, facilitating maintenance in alignment with the future electrification as well as expansion in the new service.

Paul Sumner, senior sponsor of the TRU, stressed the point that the depot was future-proofed for electric as well as bi-mode trains. He stressed its significance in creating the greener, faster, and more trustworthy railway network of the future.

Huddersfield station too is being refurbished. Three long platforms have been reopened, and the fourth will be finished by 2027. Longer coaches and increased seating capacity will enhance comfort levels, and new age infrastructure will accommodate increasing frequencies.

Passengers are encouraged to monitor official travel updates as the upgrade continues. With the depot now operational, Northern can deliver stronger service reliability while preparing for future modernization.
