A controlled chemical spill was carried out over several days and deliberately set on fire to prevent an uncontrolled explosion. During the firefighting operation, the chemicals, along with extinguishing foam, entered streams and rivers near eastern Palestine and eventually into the Ohio River.
The US government wants to hold Norfolk Southern accountable. It accuses the company of “illegally polluting the country’s waterways”.
