39 cars leave the tracks east of Lordsburg

According to an initial incident report, the accident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. on Saturday. Union Pacific said 39 cars derailed, while the train crew escaped injury.

The site was about 10 miles east of Lordsburg, near mile marker 34 on Interstate 10. Hidalgo County Fire Rescue said the derailment posed no threat to the public.

High winds were believed responsible. Because the cause was described in provisional terms, the report does not establish a final investigative finding.
