Cold storage facility near Dallas at Union Pacific Focus Site Prime Pointe

Lineage, a global temperature-controlled logistics company, has already broken ground on the cold storage facility at the Union Pacific Focus Site Prime Pointe Industrial Park. Spanning about 3,000 acres and located near four interstate highways and three airports, the site is, as Union Pacific officials note, well positioned for distribution, warehousing and manufacturing operations.

As a designated Focus Site, Prime Pointe provides rail-served access to Union Pacific’s 23-state network — a point also underlined in a recent Union Pacific news release.

According to the railroad, this Union Pacific Lineage cold storage collaboration is the latest step in how the partners are responding to evolving cold supply chain needs. Lineage’s cold-storage footprint on Union Pacific’s network already spans more than 40 rail-served sites across the central United States, Texas, California and the Pacific Northwest, giving shippers multiple options for cold supply chain rail service, as Railway Age has noted.

Reefer boxcar fleet and cold supply chain rail service

Lineage’s customers include some of the world’s largest food and beverage producers, retailers and distributors, who depend on reliable refrigerated boxcar capacity. On the rail side, Union Pacific operates what it describes as the industry’s largest refrigerated boxcar fleet. According to the railroad, its GPS-monitored, temperature-controlled reefer cars are designed to provide up to 37% better thermal protection compared with refrigerated truck trailers.

Using rail can also improve transport efficiency: a single refrigerated boxcar can provide up to 59% more space for goods. Lineage complements Union Pacific’s GPS-monitored, temperature-controlled reefer fleet with its own private pool of more than 2,800 refrigerated and insulated boxcars, strengthening the combined offer for shippers moving temperature-sensitive freight. Additional context on the new facility, including its location at Prime Pointe Park next to Union Pacific’s Dallas Intermodal Terminal, is provided in a Lineage project update.

Commenting on the project, Kenny Rocker, Union Pacific’s executive vice president of marketing and sales, said: “We’re excited to welcome Lineage, a longtime partner of Union Pacific, to Prime Pointe. Focus Sites like this make it easier and faster for businesses to connect to our 23-state network and tap into the efficiencies of rail.”
