Ukrzaliznytsia to Renew Fleet with Locomotives from the Czech Republic

Ukrzaliznytsia may receive locomotives from the Czech state rail operator České dráhy as part of a partnership aimed at modernizing Ukraine’s railway infrastructure. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
In Uzhhorod, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala to discuss new directions for bilateral cooperation. Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Balesta also joined the Ukrainian delegation.

The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, logistics, and reconstruction. Shmyhal thanked the Czech Republic for its support and emphasized that such initiatives promote peaceful development for both nations.
Ukrzaliznytsia Anticipates České dráhy Equipment for Modernization
Ukraine’s railway requires fleet upgrades due to heavy wartime usage. The network handles immense daily pressure, from humanitarian transport to freight shipments bound for the EU.
Oleksii Balesta noted that cooperation with the Czech Republic would help accelerate technical renewal and ensure smooth operation of key routes leading to the European Union.
Czech Republic Supports Ukrzaliznytsia’s Integration into TEN-T
The Czech Transport Minister stressed the importance of projects under the TEN-T initiative, which aims to integrate Ukraine into the unified European transport network. The possible transfer of locomotives was a key topic.
ČD Cargo, a subsidiary of České dráhy, has already announced plans to sell part of its rolling stock — including freight cars and locomotives. This proposal offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen Ukraine’s railway system.
