Ukrzaliznytsia receives two more ES3000 battery shunting locomotives
25.02.2026
Ukrzaliznytsia has received the next two ES3000 battery shunting locomotives. The delivery is part of a program to renew the shunting fleet and transition to more energy-efficient, lower-emission traction.

According to the supplier’s plan, the company is set to ship six more ES3000 units by the end of this year, and they will operate at various depots across Ukraine. Overall, the contract предусматривает the delivery of ten battery locomotives over two years.
Fleet modernization with ES3000
The contract with Bulgarian company Express Service OOD provides for serial deliveries of battery shunting units built for 1,520 mm gauge, matching Ukraine’s rail infrastructure. For the manufacturer, this is one of the largest orders in the battery shunting segment.
Ukrzaliznytsia chose the ES3000 to cut diesel fuel costs and reduce emissions during shunting operations. The project has also received financial support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), intended to ensure the procurement is implemented to a high technical standard.
Training and commissioning
After the locomotives arrive, Ukrzaliznytsia plans to launch a staff training program for engineers and mechanics, combining classroom instruction with hands-on practical sessions. The ES3000 rollout is expected to help streamline shunting processes and reduce energy costs.
About the manufacturer
Express Service OOD (Ruse, Bulgaria) has been producing battery and diesel locomotives for more than 20 years and also provides maintenance and modernization services for customers in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
ES3000: key capabilities and specifications
Battery traction enables economical, clean, and safe shunting. Such locomotives typically have lower operating costs and reduced maintenance needs compared with diesel equivalents.

Declared specifications for the ES3000 battery shunting locomotive:
- Operating weight: 48 t
- Rated power: 90 kW (short-term up to 250%)
- Haulage capacity: 3,000 t (adjustable parameter)
- Battery capacity: 220 kWh
- Max charging time: 5.5 hours
- Battery life: >1,800 cycles
- Max speed: 10 km/h (adjustable parameter)
The introduction of ES3000 units into shunting service is seen as a practical step toward sustainable development and the adoption of energy-efficient technologies in Ukraine’s rail sector.
