Ukrzaliznytsia, the state railway company of Ukraine, aims to purchase 1,000 containers by the year’s end, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Ukrzaliznytsia plans to acquire 1,000 containers

The acquisition includes 500 twenty-foot Open Top containers for transporting bulk cargo, including ores, and 500 twenty-foot Bulk containers for transporting agricultural products, including grains.

The procurement follows Ukrainian legislation, considering the peculiarities of public procurement during a state of war. The company plans to sign a direct agreement with a leading global manufacturer, and initial commercial proposals are being gathered through SmartTender.

The containers are expected to be manufactured by the end of the year and delivered to Ukrzaliznytsia in the first quarter of 2024.

Currently, around 40% of rail freight transportation in Europe is done using containers, while Ukraine lags with only 3%. The demand for container transport is growing, especially with the popularity of intermodal trains to Baltic Sea ports, according to Ukrzaliznytsia.

As reported earlier, Ukrzaliznytsia and LTG Cargo tested an intermodal route from Klaipeda to Kiev via Kaunas.
