Ukrzaliznytsia plans cooperation with Siemens and Velaro

During the event, First Deputy Minister for Communities Development Alyona Shkrum met with Wolfgang Anzengruber, Austria’s coordinator for Ukraine’s recovery.

The parties discussed future cooperation, especially in the railway sector. The Ukrainian side proposed several promising initiatives.

They raised the idea of working with Siemens Mobility, voestalpine, and Plasser & Theurer, as well as the possible transfer of Velaro electric trains to Ukraine.

Ukrzaliznytsia is interested in modern rolling stock that meets EU standards and would expand international rail services.

For example, Velaro trains operate in Germany and Spain’s high-speed networks. Integrating them into Ukraine’s system would improve travel quality.

Alyona Shkrum thanked Austria for its support, which has already exceeded €789 million. She also emphasized the importance of future agreements with the new Austrian government.

According to her, continued support from Austria and the EU should become a stable element of Ukraine’s postwar integration into European infrastructure.

Previously, it was reported that the company is also considering receiving locomotives from České dráhy under separate agreements.

Such initiatives highlight Ukrzaliznytsia’s strategic direction toward fleet modernization, cost reduction, and improved service quality.
