10.07.2025
Ukrzaliznytsia plans to purchase next-generation coaches with inclusive compartments, launching a tender for a pilot batch of five modernized cars. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The railway operator intends to upgrade its fleet with sleeper coaches offering enhanced comfort and energy efficiency. The announcement has been published on the Prozorro procurement platform.
The order includes two sleeper coaches with a conductor’s compartment, two without it, and one inclusive coach equipped for passengers in wheelchairs and a train manager’s compartment. The expected contract value is UAH 398.3 million. Delivery is scheduled by December 31, 2028.

Innovation on track: a new standard for passenger travel
The new coaches will have a lifespan of up to 50 years, increased capacity of 44 seats, and extended sleeping berths up to 2.2 meters. Tambour doors will be automatic and sliding, while the bogies will feature air suspension for a smoother ride. For the first time in Ukraine, sleeper coaches will be fitted with fully electric heating and individual temperature controls.
Steward-style service: redefined conductor role
The conductor’s duties will also evolve. They will no longer perform heavy physical labor and will instead function similarly to stewards on Intercity trains. The new coaches will remain compatible with existing rolling stock, and staff will be trained to maintain the advanced systems, helping reduce long-term maintenance costs.
Currently, Ukrzaliznytsia’s passenger fleet includes about 1,800 coaches. Each year, up to 100 are decommissioned due to expired service life. Chairman of the Board Oleksandr Pertsovskyi warned that without timely upgrades, the company may be able to meet only 30% of ticket demand within a few years.
Previously, Ukrzaliznytsia received 48 out of 66 coaches from Kryukiv Railway Car Building Works (KVBZ) under the 2023 state order. In 2025, a contract was signed for the delivery of an additional 95 coaches, including inclusive ones, by the end of 2028.
