UK: Trials of hybrid train underway
24.05.2024
Trials have commenced in the UK for the country’s first intercity train with hybrid propulsion, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

A five-carriage Nova 1 series 802 train, built by Hitachi Rail for operator TransPennine Express, has been fitted with a battery boasting peak power of over 700 kW, replacing one of its three diesel generators.
This has resulted in a 30% reduction in emissions and fuel costs without increasing the train’s weight.
Hitachi Rail’s total investment in the project exceeds £15 million.
Also involved in the project are leasing company Angel Trains and battery manufacturer Turntide Technologies.
Following the trials, the impact of ditching diesel on air quality and noise levels will be assessed.
Calculations suggest that with all diesel engines replaced by traction batteries, the train’s range will reach 100 km, enabling its use on non-electrified sections of routes and eliminating the need for track electrification in challenging locations.
