This funding follows the Chancellor’s announcement of €18.5 billion for city transport improvements. Greater Manchester will now accelerate plans for an all-electric fleet, new rail connections, and e-bike infrastructure.

UK Government backs zero-emission Bee Network by 2030

The UK Government’s support will allow the city to integrate bike, bus, tram, and rail services into a seamless public network. This makes Manchester the first UK region outside London with fully connected urban mobility.

Plans include deploying 100% electric buses and using renewable energy to power trams. Authorities will also expand e-bike services, improving travel access while cutting carbon emissions.

Greater Manchester will upgrade existing rail stations and introduce fare caps to ensure affordability. Many stations will also become fully accessible, enhancing service for all passengers.

UK Government funding supports major infrastructure growth

The region plans to extend the Metrolink to Stockport, add new tram-train links across Oldham, Rochdale, Heywood, and Bury, and build new stops in North Manchester. These upgrades aim to increase network capacity and regional connectivity.

Mayor Andy Burnham stated that this boost aligns with Greater Manchester’s £10 billion investment plan for the next decade. The program includes new housing, skilled job creation, and regional economic development.

Local leaders also urge the UK Government to fund intercity connections, including the proposed Liverpool–Manchester railway. This could further accelerate economic growth and enhance northern England’s transport infrastructure.

With this strategic investment, the UK Government positions Greater Manchester as a model of sustainable and inclusive public transit development.
