TWU members employed by Conrail in Detroit, Philadelphia, and New Jersey have voted to approve a new five-year labor agreement that boosts pay and strengthens benefits

The contract includes a 17.5% wage increase, pushing journeyman carmen salaries to over $100,000 annually by the contract’s end. These changes aim to reflect rising living costs and increased workload demands.

Starting July 1, the agreement enhances dental and vision coverage, adds a member-only health insurance plan, and improves vacation allowances. These benefits reflect TWU’s ongoing effort to raise workplace standards.

TWU Focuses on Higher Wages and Stronger Benefits

TWU leadership emphasized the significance of achieving these gains without entering federal mediation. The direct bargaining approach helped workers avoid delays and political complications.

TWU Rail Division Director John Feltz stated the union succeeded in delivering real financial progress while preserving critical worker protections. The union remains committed to advancing additional benefits.

Although paid sick leave was not included in this deal, union representatives confirmed they are negotiating it locally. Discussions with Conrail will continue in parallel to the ratified agreement.

TWU Sets Contract Model for Rail Labor Talks

This contract sets a benchmark in the rail industry, as unions across the U.S. press for better terms amid inflation and safety concerns. TWU’s successful negotiation strategy could guide future labor agreements.

By combining wage gains, improved health plans, and time-off benefits, TWU secured a balanced package for its members. The result demonstrates that strategic negotiation can yield substantial outcomes.

Workers and union officials now look to expand progress through local bargaining. As TWU builds on its success, members anticipate continued improvements in working conditions and benefits.
