UK-based Turntide Technologies will supply batteries for new hybrid trains produced by Hitachi Rail at its plant in County Durham, boosting localization and cutting emissions. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The $13 million contract includes delivery of LFP Gen 2 lithium iron phosphate batteries and a battery management system. It secures long-term orders for Turntide and enables facility expansion.

These new batteries are more compact and powerful than previous lithium-ion models, making them ideal for powering advanced hybrid train systems.

Hitachi Rail is currently executing two major contracts: one for 14 trains for FirstGroup, and another for 9 trains for Arriva Grand Central.

Both projects are scheduled for completion by 2028, ensuring steady factory workload in the coming years.

Batteries Improve Efficiency and Cut Fuel Use

Last year, Hitachi Rail successfully tested the hybrid Nova 1 train in the UK by replacing one diesel generator with a battery system.

Initial expectations aimed for a 30% fuel savings, but test results exceeded predictions, showing reductions of 35–50%.

This shift to battery power also helps operators meet environmental regulations and reduce dependence on diesel fuel.

Turntide Project Strengthens UK Industry

The partnership with Turntide Technologies strengthens the national supply chain and supports domestic manufacturing growth.

Additionally, using next-generation battery systems aligns with the UK’s transport decarbonization goals.

Hitachi Rail and Turntide are focusing on innovation and localization to accelerate the shift toward cleaner rail mobility.
