The ambitious initiative includes a 2,094-kilometer railway line in Turkey, designed to enhance trade connectivity. The Turkish government is set to invest $17.9 billion in building 1,655 kilometers of new railway lines linked to 439 kilometers of existing infrastructure. This development aims to strengthen ties with neighboring countries and facilitate efficient trade routes.

How the Development Road Boosts Regional Trade and Connectivity?

In addition to railways, Turkey’s investment covers 1,924 kilometers of roads within its borders. Uraloglu revealed that $2 billion will be spent constructing 331 kilometers of highways, which are critical for linking regional transit hubs. This effort underscores Turkey’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s strategic goals.

Passengers Contribute Billions Annually to Boost Local Economies

Iraq’s Development Road project will connect the Al-Faw Grand Port in southern Iraq to Turkey’s border. This $17 billion project intends to position Iraq as a transit hub by reducing Asia-to-Europe travel times. Both rail and road networks will play pivotal roles in achieving this vision.

Last April, Iraq, Turkey, the UAE, and Qatar signed an agreement to cooperate on the project. This partnership aims to establish frameworks for implementation while fostering regional economic integration. The collaboration highlights the project’s geopolitical significance.

The Iraqi Transport Minister, Razzaq Al-Saadawi, recently announced Turkey’s formation of a council involving Bulgaria, Hungary, and Serbia. This council focuses on linking Europe with Iraq’s Development Road, further enhancing the project’s global reach.

The initiative also includes energy pipelines alongside its transportation infrastructure. This dual-purpose design ensures the project’s role as a critical hub for goods, energy, and global trade. Regional businesses and industries are expected to benefit significantly from these developments.

Additionally, the project promises substantial employment opportunities for Iraq and neighboring nations. The creation of jobs will contribute to economic growth and stability throughout the region. This underscores the initiative’s potential as a catalyst for broader prosperity.

By integrating rail, road, and energy pipelines, Iraq’s Development Road will become a vital route for international commerce. Turkey’s substantial investment affirms its commitment to strengthening regional ties and boosting economic opportunities.
