Turkey continues to actively modernize its railway transport
15.02.2024
According to announced plans, the national carrier TCDD plans to acquire a significant amount of new rolling stock by 2027, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This includes 95 electric locomotives and 20 diesel locomotives for mainline transport, as well as 7 battery and one hybrid shunting locomotive, 56 electric trains, 49 passenger cars, and track equipment.
In Finland, train services have been halted due to a railway workers’ strike
The total amount for these goals is 73 billion Turkish lira (approximately $2.4 billion).
Representatives from the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure state that 5 billion lira ($160 million) of this amount has already been confirmed as subsidies for the year 2024.
In addition, an additional 8.5 billion lira ($275 million) has been allocated for the modernization of existing rolling stock this year.
This is an important step towards ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers, as well as increasing the efficiency of freight transport. It is worth noting that Turkey is actively implementing a strategy to develop domestic production in the railway sector.
Since 2023, the state-owned company Türasaş has been producing its own regional electric trains E44000.
This allows the country to reduce dependence on imports and create jobs domestically. Moreover, based on these developments, work is underway to create an electric train capable of reaching speeds of up to 225 km/h.
Jointly with the Railway Transportation Technologies Institute TÜBİTAK RUTE, new models of locomotives are also being developed, including the electric locomotive E5000 and the diesel shunting locomotive.
These steps demonstrate Turkey’s commitment to modern and efficient railway transportation systems, which contribute to the country’s economic development and enhance service levels for the population.
