The first five locomotives were handed over last week during a ceremony in Eskişehir. Manufacturer Türasaş will supply the remaining units over the next three years.

The E5000 model was designed by the TÜBİTAK RUTE research institute. It has been certified to meet the European TSI standard.

The locomotive reaches speeds of up to 140 km/h and delivers a power output of 5 MW. These features make it suitable for operation on key corridors of Turkey’s rail network.

The Locomotive Project Strengthens Turkey’s Industrial Independence

Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu highlighted that 115 domestic suppliers are involved in the project. Components — from transformers to control systems — are produced within Turkey.

This significantly reduces import dependence and enhances the country’s industrial sovereignty. Turkish-made traction motors and locomotive bodies are also used.

The delivery schedule is already set. By the end of this year, another 15 locomotives will be delivered. In 2026, 30 more units will enter service, followed by the final 45 in 2027.

Turkey Prioritizes the Growth of National Rail Manufacturing

The E5000 project is part of a broader strategy to advance high-tech rail manufacturing. Investments in local production also pave the way for export potential.

With this approach, Turkey is promoting its own engineering expertise while strengthening its position in the global rail technology market. The E5000 locomotive represents a major step forward.
