Tri-Rail ridership record numbers are climbing to a new peak in 2025, according to the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA). In coverage from Metro Magazine, the agency says the regional commuter rail system has surpassed 4.5 million rides in calendar year 2025, the highest calendar-year total in Tri-Rail history.

The same threshold was also reached in Tri-Rail’s fiscal year, which runs from July 2024 through June 2025. SFRTA said ridership cleared 4.5 million rides in that period as well.

Taken together, those results put Tri-Rail ahead of its prior high-water mark from 2019, when the system exceeded 4.4 million rides in both the fiscal and calendar years.

Continued Growth

SFRTA Executive Director David Dech tied the latest figures to an upward trend that was already apparent in 2024, when Tri-Rail finished the calendar year with its second-highest ridership total. As previously covered by Railway Supply, the service is continuing to accommodate a growing mix of riders who use it for regional travel, including daily commuters as well as seasonal and leisure trips.

“Our passengers are the lifeblood of this system, and we are deeply grateful for their continued support,” Dech said. “We will repay that trust by continuing to enhance the service in every way possible and try to provide the best possible travel experience that South Florida deserves.”

Tri-Rail began the year by again offering its New Year’s Special Service, with post-midnight train service for partygoers celebrating at Bayfront, as outlined on the Tri-Rail New Year’s Special Service page.

2026 events and planning in Miami-Dade

Looking ahead, SFRTA said Tri-Rail is positioning itself for 2026, including service for spectators attending events at Miami Freedom Park, which is opening this year. The commuter rail operator also expects to work with Miami-Dade County’s transportation committee as a key partner for the FIFA World Cup and said it is actively preparing to provide transportation for World Cup matches and associated Fan Festival activities.
