The companies plan to introduce high-speed Frecciarossa trains between Italian cities Rome and Milan and the German city of Munich by the end of 2026, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

According to a preliminary agreement signed during the pilot project phase, passenger trains will operate on two routes, reducing travel time and enhancing convenience.
Survey by Ukrainian Railways: Are you satisfied with freight transportation by rail?
A key element of this agreement is the joint pilot project between Italy and Germany, aimed at developing cross-border transportation as part of long-term cooperation.
The plans include establishing high-speed connections to make travel between Italy and Germany more efficient and cost-effective.
Additionally, the agreement allows for regular speeds on the Verona – Innsbruck – Munich route, providing flexibility and adaptability to the system, opening up possibilities for diverse passenger routes.
According to FS Group, after the Brenner Base Tunnel, a 55 km tunnel connecting Fortezza station in northern Italy to Innsbruck, Austria, opens in 2032, travel time will be reduced by approximately 1 hour.
This significant infrastructure improvement aims to optimize transportation between countries and strengthen their transport integration.
Trains from Rome to Munich will make intermediate stops in cities such as Florence, Bologna, Verona, Rovereto, Trento, Bolzano, Brenner, and Innsbruck. Trains from Milan will stop in Brescia, Verona, Bolzano, Brenner, and Innsbruck, providing diverse travel options.
Special attention is given to passenger amenities.
For example, German tourists in Italy can use the FrecciaLinks service, allowing them to combine train and bus trips for maximum convenience within the country.
In November 2023, Trenitalia signed an €861 million contract with Hitachi Rail for the supply of 30 high-speed trains certified for operation in France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Deliveries are expected to begin in spring 2026, emphasizing a commitment to technological development and improving transportation efficiency.
Currently, Trenitalia operates up to 13,000 railway and bus services daily in Europe.
Notably, in Spain, Frecciarossa trains under the Iryo brand perform 70 daily routes between major cities, while Trenitalia France operates 10 routes in France.
Unlike Germany, passenger transport in Spain and France operates under open access to infrastructure.
This agreement and the new plans reflect a commitment to creating a more integrated and efficient high-speed railway network in Europe, facilitating travel between countries and stimulating tourism and business development.
