In August, the first unit arrived at the Faurei Testing Centre, where it began dynamic trials. Additional testing will follow on TSI-certified tracks in Germany, ensuring compliance with European safety and interoperability standards.
Although the prototype wears a temporary blue protective livery, it will receive its final dark red paint once testing is complete. The final version will represent Alstom’s identity and Romania’s growing investment in high-speed rail.
Traxx Universal locomotive enhances rail efficiency
The Traxx Universal locomotive can reach 200 km/h and pull up to 16 passenger cars. Its four-axle design integrates the advanced ERTMS onboard system to boost safety, efficiency, and network compatibility.
Alstom’s regional managing director, Gabriel Stanciu, highlighted the milestone. “We are proud to see the Traxx Universal locomotive progressing on schedule. This marks a major commitment to modern, reliable rail transport in Romania,” he stated.
Deliveries are expected to begin in the first half of 2026. The long-term service plan includes a possible 20-year extension, ensuring durability and cost-effective operations for the national rail network.
Globally, more than 3,000 Traxx units are active across 20 countries, traveling over 300 million kilometers per year. The platform’s performance track record strengthens Alstom’s presence in Central and Eastern Europe.
