TransNamib is pursuing modernization to improve operations and achieve financial stability by 2028. The company’s strategy focuses on acquiring new rolling stock and upgrading infrastructure for long-term success. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The company currently operates 67 locomotives, with only 20 in reliable condition. To address these challenges, it has secured an N$2.6-billion loan from the Development Bank of Namibia and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
This funding will facilitate the acquisition of 23 new locomotives and refurbishment of seven existing ones, extending their lifespan by 20 years. Additionally, the funds will be used for purchasing multipurpose wagons, modernizing workshops, and upgrading signaling systems. These improvements will help streamline operations and enhance safety across the network.
Addressing Challenges and Ensuring Sustainable Growth for TransNamib
Vandalism and theft of railway infrastructure have caused delays and safety concerns, hampering TransNamib’s operations. The modernization project also includes implementing enhanced security measures to protect assets and improve reliability.
In addition, the Namibian government is constructing a new railway line between Kranzberg and Otjiwarongo, with future extensions to Tsumeb. This development will further strengthen TransNamib’s ability to transport key commodities like cement, copper, charcoal, and fuel efficiently.
With a workforce of 1,100 employees, TransNamib remains committed to driving economic growth and ensuring reliable transportation services. By investing in modernization, the company is poised to secure its position as a vital contributor to Namibia’s infrastructure development and economic success.
