Transcontinental Chief to Link East and West in Three Days
AmeriStarRail has revealed its plans for the Transcontinental Chief, a private rail project connecting Los Angeles to New York in just three days. The company is targeting a debut on May 10, 2026, aligning with National Train Day, the U.S. Semiquincentennial, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The rail operator envisions a strategic partnership with Amtrak. CEO Scott Spencer believes the route will outperform Amtrak’s current long-haul offerings. He also claims it addresses both logistical challenges and economic opportunities for the rail sector.
Service will begin at Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey, connecting Manhattan by ferry or PATH. Due to clearance issues at Penn Station, the train cannot use Amtrak’s double-deck Superliners in Manhattan. However, Los Angeles passengers won’t face such limitations.
The new route will replace the Southwest Chief and Pennsylvanian lines. A single-level segment will serve Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., expanding access across the East Coast.
Transcontinental Chief to Serve Truckers and Route 66 Travelers
Beyond passengers, the Transcontinental Chief will support the trucking industry. With roll-on, roll-off flatcars, it allows drivers to board with their tractor-trailers and rest onboard while meeting federal rest requirements.
AmeriStarRail calls it a “rolling rest stop” that relieves highway parking pressure. RailPorts across the route will offer loading zones for vehicles traveling 200–500 miles per leg.
The company plans to integrate Amtrak’s Auto Train services, eventually transporting motorcycles, RVs, and charter coaches. Future expansions could include stops in Chicago and the Grand Canyon, offering flexible logistics and broader reach.
