Bologna: A leap forward with Urbos trams

Bologna’s city council has entered a contract with CAF for the supply of 60 Urbos trams. These modern trams, measuring 35 meters in length, accommodate over 200 passengers. Their standout feature is their ability to operate independently of an overhead power supply thanks to onboard batteries. This feature allows flexibility, especially in historic areas where overhead lines might not be feasible.

The initial order includes 33 units at a cost exceeding €130 million, with an option for an additional 12 trams. The deal also includes maintenance for four years and the provision of spare parts, ensuring the long-term reliability of the fleet. This contract will significantly boost Bologna’s public transport, making it more efficient and eco-friendly.

Rome expands its fleet with Urbos trams

Rome’s public transport operator, Atac, has expanded its fleet of Urbos trams by exercising an option from a previous contract signed in 2023. The city has ordered 20 additional trams, valued at €80 million, which will soon be added to its network. These trams are part of a larger plan, as Atac aims to fully modernize its fleet with Urbos models. The total capacity of the contract allows for the purchase of up to 121 trams, with 40 already ordered last year.

Urbos trams are celebrated for their low floor design, which improves accessibility, and their modular nature, which allows for customization based on city requirements. Additionally, they are recognized for their energy efficiency, contributing to greener urban transport .

With these recent developments, Bologna and Rome join other major cities like Zaragoza, Budapest, and Sydney that have embraced Urbos trams as part of their public transport strategy. These cities benefit from the trams’ capacity to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and offer a reliable transport solution.

Global reach of Urbos trams

CAF’s Urbos trams operate in more than 20 cities worldwide, with notable projects in Zaragoza, Luxembourg, and the West Midlands. These trams have been designed to meet the specific needs of each city, offering flexibility in configuration, passenger capacity, and energy sources. This adaptability makes them a top choice for cities aiming to modernize their transport systems while minimizing environmental impact.

By introducing Urbos trams, both Bologna and Rome are making significant strides towards a more sustainable future. These trams not only improve the overall passenger experience but also align with the cities’ goals to reduce carbon emissions and enhance urban mobility.
