Tram Fleet Update Process in Gothenburg

In 2022, Skoda Group and the Swedish carrier Västtrafik signed a contract for the modernization of the M3 tram fleet. The total deal value amounted to €79 million (approximately $85 million). The trams will be updated gradually until 2030.

The M31 trams, which are being modernized, were originally produced between 1984-1992 by the Swedish company ASEA and were later equipped with low-floor sections between 1998-2003. These trams already underwent major repairs in the 2010s when the electronics were replaced at the Ekova Electric plant.

Implementing this program will extend the lifespan of the trams by 15 years and significantly improve the quality of public transport in Gothenburg.
