Construction Halts Major Train Lines in Central Tokyo

East Japan Railway Co. suspended sections of the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines starting early Saturday. Service between Ueno and Osaki, and Higashi-Jujo to Shinagawa, remains closed until midday Sunday.

Additionally, trains on the Yamanote inner loop between Osaki and Ueno will not run on Sunday morning. On both days, service will operate at only 40% of the usual capacity.

To reduce commuter inconvenience, JR East urged passengers to use Tokyo subway lines and other rail operators. These alternatives aim to absorb the estimated 550,000 people affected by the changes.

Tokyo Rail Upgrades Aim to Improve Haneda Access

The project includes platform expansion at Tamachi Station and the relocation of surrounding tracks. This work supports the future launch of a new rail link between Tokyo’s center and Haneda Airport.

One planned route will depart from Tokyo Station, and another from Shin-Kiba, set to open in fiscal 2031. The Shin-Kiba line will also enhance travel to Tokyo Disney Resort from the airport.

A third route will originate from Shinjuku Station, expanding the capital’s transport network further. These upgrades respond to rising passenger demand and aim to streamline airport transfers citywide.

Though weekend services are reduced, JR East stressed the long-term benefits of faster, more direct airport connections. Travelers and residents alike will see improved access once the project concludes.
