As per police, around 80 were injured with some of them bearing grave trauma.

Rescue teams evacuated passengers stranded quickly and gave first aid on the spot, and helicopters airlifted the seriously injured to proximate hospitals.

As the accident occurred, the rail services were put on hold, and replacement bus services were implemented.

Multi-kilometer trafic jam developed on the road from Rožňava, so police limited access to the accident site.

Local newspaper reported that the aftermath of the impact saw one of the trains suspended over a ravine, posing the risk whereby the cars could slump into the valley.

The rescuers shored up the building to avoid collapse and secure the safety of the rescue workers.

Causes of the Train Collision and Government Response

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok reported that preliminary investigations indicate a breach of the rule resulted in the smash. He clarified that the one of the train drivers didn’t give way to the other oncoming one and mentioned that human failure was the most probable cause.

The tests revealed that one driver was abstinent, whilst the second driver, with heavy injuries, was rushed to hospital. Doctors will give him drug and booze tests once his condition becomes stable.

Officials vowed to investigate thoroughly, as the Slovak rail net is one of the safest in Central Europe. Transport safety specialists pointed to the urgency to upgrade the signaling system and introduce automatic control on single tracks.

Such actions would be safer and avoid future accidents because systems that run automatically minimize the chance of human failure.
