Track maintenance equipment procurement: RhB, India, Egypt and Colombia

Track maintenance equipment procurement has been recorded across several markets—from Switzerland and India to Egypt and Colombia. Recent announcements cover new agreements for track maintenance vehicles, rail grinding trains and diagnostic trains.

Track maintenance equipment procurement for RhB: MPV VentuS by Windhoff
The narrow-gauge Rhaetian Railway (RhB) has placed an order with Germany’s Windhoff for 8 universal MPV VentuS track maintenance vehicles, as stated in an RhB press release. The contract value is 57 million Swiss francs (€61 million).

Each four-axle vehicle delivers 500 kW of power at the wheel rim and comes with a crane designed for a range of attachments. Depending on operational needs, a snowplough or an excavator can be fitted. Power is supplied by two diesel generators, while the option of installing a traction battery is also being considered for the longer term. Rail grinding trains: assembly by BEML and Loram in India
BEML and the Indian subsidiary of U.S.-based Loram have signed a contract to assemble 15 rail grinding trains. The deal is valued at 1.57 billion rupees ($17.4 million), which corresponds to $1.16 million per unit.
Under the arrangement, BEML acts as a subcontractor in the production of rail grinding equipment, which has been localized in India since 2023 under the Make in India program. The two-car Loram machines are intended for grinding turnouts and will be used to maintain Indian Railways infrastructure.
MerMec diagnostic trains and Vulcano LGT 20M acceptance tests
MerMec will supply diagnostic trains for Egypt’s high-speed railways, as reported by Railway Gazette. The contract was signed with a consortium of local firms Orascom and Arab Contractors and Germany’s Siemens Mobility, which are building the country’s first HSR network spanning 2,000 km with a design speed of 250 km/h. The contract value and the number of trains ordered have not been disclosed.
In Colombia, meanwhile, the Vulcano LGT 20M rail grinding train from SRT, destined for the Medellín Metro, has completed acceptance testing. The tests took place on the Italian manufacturer’s factory tracks in Fano in the presence of specialists from the Metro de Medellín transport operator. Contract details with the Colombian customer have not been disclosed.
