Rising Transit Demand in Toronto Fuels Growth

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) announced that it had reached 34 billion cumulative rides since launching operations in 1921. This landmark underscores the increasing demand for reliable and accessible transit.

In 2024 alone, TTC recorded 420 million total rides. That figure rose by 23.5 million compared to 2023, reflecting renewed public confidence in urban mobility services.

Subway usage contributed 181 million trips, while streetcars carried 35 million passengers. Buses accounted for 204 million rides, remaining the most popular mode within the Toronto network.

Toronto Projects Higher Ridership in 2025

With continued investment in service improvements, Toronto expects ridership to climb to 439 million in 2025. Enhancements include fleet upgrades, infrastructure renewal, and better scheduling.

TTC officials noted these upgrades aim to improve punctuality and comfort. As Toronto’s population expands and new developments emerge, the role of public transit becomes increasingly critical.

Urban growth drives demand for a connected network. By strengthening its system, Toronto ensures a more efficient, accessible, and rider-focused service for the years ahead.
