Grottaminarda Tunnel Excavation Completed on the Naples — Bari HSR Section

Italian construction company Webuild has completed an important stage of construction on the Naples — Bari HSR section. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The excavation of the 2-kilometer Grottaminarda tunnel on the Apice — Irpinia section has been successfully completed. This milestone is a significant step in the development of the project, which promises to greatly improve the region’s transport infrastructure.

The tunnel boring machine (TBM) Aurora, measuring 100 meters in length and 12 meters in diameter, was launched in August 2023. It is now being prepared for the excavation of the new 4-kilometer Melito tunnel. Construction on this section continues, with parallel work already underway on the 6.4-kilometer Rocchetta tunnel, which will be the third tunnel between Apice and Irpinia.
The Naples — Bari HSR project includes 145 kilometers of railway and is divided into seven lots. Webuild is responsible for four of these sections. The project involves the construction of 74 kilometers of railway track, six tunnels, 10 bridges, and six new stations and stops.
