The Tokyo Metro operator has revealed that its maintenance subsidiary, Metro Sharyo, falsified measurements made during the assembly of wheelsets.

According to the announcement on Wednesday, Metro Sharyo altered the data to appear compliant with standards. The company considered this alteration acceptable if it remained within certain limits.
The data was altered for 233 axles of 161 metro cars out of approximately 11,000 axles from 2,700 cars owned by Tokyo Metro. The affected cars were used on eight Tokyo Metro lines, including the Ginza and Tozai lines. Some train cars from Toyo Rapid Railway in Chiba Prefecture and Saitama Railway in Saitama Prefecture, both of which contracted Metro Sharyo for work on their cars, were also impacted.
Tokyo Metro will continue to operate the affected cars after confirming their safety through ultrasonic checks, except for two cars used on the Yurakucho and Fukutoshin lines, where the axle data significantly exceeds standard levels. On Saturday, Tokyo Metro canceled one train on the Nanboku Line due to the data manipulation but resumed operations after confirming its safety.
Tokyo Metro stated that the data manipulation would no longer affect metro operations. The issue was uncovered during urgent inspections by the Ministry of Transport following the revelation of data falsification by Japan Freight Railway. Similar data falsification was also found in the Toei Subway, operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, affecting 467 axles of 156 cars.
