TRSL contract with Indian Railways: scope and terms

The customer is the national operator Indian Railways. The contract value is INR 2.7 billion including GST (about $30.3 million) — the parameters and scope of work are set out in a Titagarh Rail Systems filing for BSE. Alongside the deliveries, the agreement also covers long-term maintenance and staff training. All rolling stock as well as a full set of spare parts are to be handed over to the customer within four years from the contract signing.

Titagarh Rail Systems order for track machines and the market context

According to the statements, the machines are to be developed by TRSL in-house. That stands out in the Indian market, where the track-machinery segment is largely dominated by foreign players that localize assembly through joint ventures under the Make in India program.

Track machinery in India: Plasser & Theurer and TRSL’s plans

The largest supplier of track machinery for Indian Railways is currently considered Austria’s Plasser & Theurer: in 2019, the company launched an assembly plant in Kalyan (site details are available on the Plasser India website). Against this backdrop, TRSL—one of India’s largest private rolling-stock manufacturers—continues to expand capacity and operates three facilities in the country.

In addition, it owns three plants in Italy acquired in the mid-2010s from Firema Trasporti, a point previously covered by Railway Supply. TRSL’s longer-term goal is to become a global rolling-stock player with revenue of more than $10 billion.
