The war affects the implementation of railway projects in the Netherlands
07.04.2022
The Dutch railway operator ProRail predicts that Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine will have an impact on the implementation of railway projects in this country.
It is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to Rail.insider.
“There is a drama going on in Ukraine right now that the whole world is watching,” said John Woppen, CEO of ProRail. – The war will also affect the railway sector, and we must take this into account in our activities. We face uncertainty as to whether materials can be delivered on time and at what cost. This affects our tenders and work.
Among the negative consequences of the war in Ukraine are a significant increase in energy prices, disruptions in supply chains and market uncertainty, the official said.
Due to rising gas prices, European rolling mills have begun to reduce production. Accordingly, the Dutch operator will not receive 60 km of rails, which were supposed to arrive in March and April. Difficulties can also arise for manufacturers of sleepers, since they contain steel. In the meantime, a shortage of wood makes it difficult to work on the roofs of the platforms.
According to John Woppen, the war in Ukraine may also have a negative impact on long-term projects.
Consultations are currently ongoing with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Resources, other government customers, contractors and suppliers on measures that will allow the work and tenders to continue as much as possible.
