06.10.2023
Steve Rotheram, the Mayor of Liverpool, inaugurated the UK’s first battery-powered trains with an official trip from the new station at Headbolt Lane in Kirkby, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
The new station, costing £80 million (€92 million), is served by innovative battery technology in the region’s new trains, allowing for the first network expansion of Merseyrail in 29 years.

This marks the first passenger rail service in the UK to operate using battery technology and opens up the potential for future network expansion beyond the city.
These innovative trains will significantly reduce carbon emissions, paving the way for a cleaner and more environmentally friendly integrated transport network in London.
“Headbolt Lane station sets a new standard for public transport in this country, and it’s the least our residents deserve,” said the Mayor of the Liverpool City Region.
The battery technology is initially being installed on seven of the most advanced Class 777 trains in the region.
In a phased rollout to ease the use of the new technology, the station will initially be served by one Merseyrail line per hour to Liverpool Central, with the number of services gradually increasing to four trains per hour.
