The transformation of the Class 08 diesel shunting locomotive into a battery-powered marvel, known as the 08e, signifies a significant leap towards cost-effective and emission-free solutions for shunting and industrial purposes, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

diesel shunting locomotive into a battery-powered version

These locomotives have faithfully served ports, distribution centers, and depots in the UK for over six decades, but as the country strides towards a net-zero future, the era of diesel power is drawing to a close.

Shunting Operations with Battery-Powered Locomotives

Positive Traction, the driving force behind this conversion, has equipped the 08e with plug-in lithium-ferro-phosphate traction batteries supplied by Lithion Battery Inc.

These batteries find their home in the ‘PT Powerpod,’ a compact unit that houses the batteries, a battery management system, charger, and other essential components.

The prototype boasts a 450 hp rating, but its design allows for scalability by incorporating two to six of the 88 kWh battery pods, easily exchangeable using a forklift truck.

The cab of the 08e has undergone extensive modifications to enhance visibility, with double glazing and the addition of remote monitoring equipment.

It also features a roof-mounted heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning unit for operator comfort.

Other notable features include head and tail light clusters from BMAC Ltd, regenerative braking for energy efficiency, internal and external CCTV for enhanced safety, and oil-free connecting rod bearings to minimize maintenance and prevent oil spillage inside the locomotive.

Ethernet connections further enable remote diagnostics, multiple working configurations, and remote control.

What sets the 08e apart is its retention of the existing control desk, reducing the training time required for drivers and depot staff.

Additionally, critical components such as frames, traction motors, and buffer beams have been retained, ensuring a smooth transition to this greener and more sustainable mode of shunting locomotion.

As the UK progresses towards a greener future, the 08e represents a promising path for the rail industry to reduce emissions and contribute to a cleaner environment.
